Study of the urban grid:
The Largo Ana Rosa Intermodal System
This project was developed for my Final Graduation Project (TFG) in the Architecture and Urbanism course.
As can be seen, just by the title, it is related to the projects carried out for the Ousadias competitions from IBRACON (2022 and 2023), as it also has a macro view of an urban area.
The project is about the redevelopment of an intermodal hub in the city of São Paulo, but what is an intermodal system?
- An intermodal system is a "node" between 2 or more modes of transportation. In the case of Ana Rosa, it is the connection between the metro network, lines 1 and 2, and an urban bus terminal.
The intermodal system brings benefits to society, such as:
-
Ease of exchanges;
-
Cost efficiency;
-
Sustainability.
And that’s why they prioritize the urban environment and provide a quality of life for people.
Based on the identification of these benefits, the goal of the work is: "To redevelop the Ana Rosa Intermodal Terminal to meet the city’s demands."
The guiding questions are:
- urban growth and mobility expansion;
- current challenges of intermodal systems.
They generated the research question (How to redevelop the Ana Rosa Intermodal System?) to achieve the justifications for the project proposal:
-
Transformations in the neighborhood;
-
Limited space in the terminal;
-
Reduction in the infrastructure offered;
-
New bus stops around;
-
History
Initial aspects of the city’s development:
-
rural origins;
-
commercial routes;
-
urban expansion - railway.

-
founding of institutions;
-

-
Subdivisions of the city
-

Modernização da Infra Urbana
-
1893 - automobiles;
-
1896 - electric light;
-
1897 - concession of electric trams;
-
1898 - creation of the position of mayor;
-
1900 - The San Paulo Tramway;
-
1910 - buses.
Automobiles + Buses + need for contract renewal = tram stagnation - AVENUE PLAN!
-
3 million inhabitants = need for a rapid mass transport system (metro).
-
Mass Transport Projects
-
1927 - Light - failure;
-
1928 - Tramway Cantareira;
-
1929 - "North-South," "West," "East," and "Southeast" network;
-
1945 - São Paulo Metropolitan System;
-
1947 - creation of the Urban Planning Department - development of the PDE and institutionalization of CMTC (bus and tram management);
-
1948 -creation of the Department of Works - project developed by CGE;
-
1955 - Metro Commission - monorail project by Almeg;
-
1957 - Diamond lines by Carlos Lodi (Urban Planning Dept.);.
-
While various projects were being developed, the city’s revenue was declining due to the shift in economic sources (agriculture to manufacturing), and consequently, there was an increase in automobile usage.
During the mayoralty of Faria Lima (1968), bus corridors were expanded and the HMD study for the metro route we know today was conducted:
-
Development of the campaign "São Paulo depends on the metro!"
-
Subdivision of zones (Cordon Line) for traffic analysis of the city.
Development of the Urban Structure Guidelines - PUB - 1968:
- adaptation of international inspirations to the city's conditions;
- polinuclear structure - activity corridors to the railway network;
- improve mobility with metro lines and integrated public transport systems;
- creation of SPtrans in 1995 to assist CMTC in managing public transportation (increased demand);
- integration and modality of transportation (SITC) - 2001:
-
Buses - low-demand areas;
-
Metro and Train - high-demand areas.
-
Transportation System
-
Ana Rosa Station
-
Complement to the Paraíso station;
-
Commercial development;
-
TAna Rosa Terminal = Terminal Paulista (1974);
-
-
Impacts
-
Urban renewals - lack of quality public spaces for society
-
-
-
Ana Rosa Station
-
18 bus lines - overcrowding;
-
Increased number of passengers;
-
2020 - privatization of the Terminal;
-
Commercial exploitation for 30 years;
-
Intention to build the terminal;
-
-
Trisul Project;
-
There was an initiative to improve the accessibility of the metro station, but the project was altered.

Strategic Master Plan
From 2014 to 2023, the PDE integrated urban mobility guidelines, bringing the Municipal Accessible Routes Plan and the Municipal Waterway Plan.
